Week #14 Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • We will be wrapping up and assessing our current math unit on place value and adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers this week.
  • New spelling words will be sent home on Monday with our test being on Friday.
  • Our reading and writing focus remains on informational reading/writing. We'll continue researching our topics and drafting our paragraphs as we work towards making a class coloring book of animals. We'll also learn about different text structures in our reading.
  • This week we'll continue with our Bible curriculum stories (Cain & Abel, Noah, and the Tower of Babel) before shifting to the Christmas story leading up to Christmas Break.
  • Social studies will have us learning about the geography of Michigan.
Third Grade Dates to Remember:

  • December 10, 12pm-2pm - 3rd grade field trip to ODC. (Our class will need 3 chaperones. Word has it that most of this field trip will be indoors, but there's no guarantee there won't be an outdoor element!) Send me an email if you would like to chaperone!
  • December 16,  12:20-2pm - Gingerbread Houses (Third graders will work with their peers to construct their houses.) We are SO THANKFUL that all of our donation slots on our sign-up have been FILLED! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far!
  • December 17, 2:15-3pm - Our 3rd grade class Christmas party. I would love it if some parent(s) would like to take this over! In years past, parents have elected to do "stations" for the party - a snack station, a game station, and a craft station. But if you are willing to volunteer, I'm open to however you'd like to run the party! Just send me an email if you'd like to help with the party.

Other Tidbits:

As part of our mission to equip minds and nurture hearts to transform the world for Jesus Christ, HC works to provide students with the knowledge and skills to guard themselves in this fallen world. Part of HC’s commitment to student safety is providing counsel and resources for sexual abuse prevention and intervention from the Children’s Advocacy Center. Please see the attached informed consent letter for more information. The Children’s Advocacy Center will not be sharing any videos during their lessons at Holland Christian.

If you have any questions about the content of the presentation, we encourage you to reach out to the Children’s Advocacy Center. If you would like your child to not participate in the presentation, please fill out this form at least one week prior to the presentation date. HC will anticipate participation unless they receive a submitted opt-out form.

Our classroom presentation will be on Wednesday, December 10th from 10:20-11:15am.

Week #12

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • In writing we will be choosing topics and begin researching for our Informational Writing piece.
  • In reading, we'll continue to learn and practice skills that help us read informational books and improve our fluency.
  • The Unit 2 assessment went really well last week, and we are already well into our next unit on place-value and adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.
  • In social studies we will continue learning about the geography of Michigan. Our next read aloud, Paddle-to-the-Sea, will go along nicely with this unit.
  • November's Bible memory passage is Psalm 100.
Other Tidbits:
  • Making gingerbread houses has been a long-standing tradition in third grade. The students work together with their peers to construct gingerbread houses in teams across the third grade classrooms. In addition to being a memorable tradition, it also helps us meet HC’s goal of integrating our Discipleship Practices throughout our curriculum. The activity of constructing gingerbread houses offers a beautiful opportunity for our students to integrate three of these practices: Community Building, as they work together and build relationships; Servant Living, as they look for ways to help their neighbors instead of being self-focused; and Kingdom Building, as they get a tangible glimpse into how the Body of Christ was designed to work to meet the needs of all members. We are excited to increase peer-to-peer communication across all three third grade classes and build relationships as the students problem-solve and use their creativity alongside each other.
