| Fifth graders with Gary D. Schmidt (back row, center). |
Monday was a hit! Our day was jam-packed, and the students were able to experience many different things:
- Author visit and book-signing with Newbery Honor winning author, Gary D. Schmidt.
- Tour of Calvin's walkway over the E. Beltline and Fieldhouse (including pool, climbing wall, and basketball courts).
- Tour and hands-on activity at the Dice Mineralogical Museum at Calvin College.
- Informational talk with ZonderKidz Publishing House representative, Jessica Westra and Baker Book House representative, Josh.
- Scavenger Hunt and tour through Baker Book House ending with a free book for every student!
Thank you to all of the chaperones who helped make this day a success!
Students have all chosen a story book to use as the subject for their Literary Essay. They are working to write a "claim" about their book and find supporting evidence within the text.
Reminder: With the cold, wet weather upon us, please check with your fifth grader to be sure they have indoor shoes and outdoor boots or shoes. Our playground can be quite the muddy-mess, so if the same shoes are being worn in both places, our carpet takes quite a beating. Thank you!
In Math, we have seen improvement in our simplification skills as we move into multiplying fractions by whole numbers and mixed numbers. Hooray!
On Thursday, 11/29 the 5th grade classes will travel by bus for a field trip to Hope College. We have been invited to be part of a pilot program for a special art learning experience with Hope College's Kruizenga Art Museum and the Holland Area Arts Council (HAAC).
During our time on Hope's campus we will visit the Peale Science Center, have lunch, and tour exhibits at the Kruizenga Art Museum. Our focus will be African art connected with our learning in Social Studies this year. We will then walk to the HAAC in downtown Holland where students will create artwork in their studio space.
We will need several parent chaperones for our field trip. If you are interested in accompanying the class to Hope College, please email Mrs. Smit by Thursday, 11/15 at noon. Your help will be confirmed in the next Friday blog post.
Looking ahead, please note that Wednesday, November 21, will be a half day with dismissal being at 11:30am, due to Thanksgiving Break.
