Twentieth Week Tidbits

Today marks the end of the second marking period!  Amazing.  Look for report cards to be sent home next week Friday, January 25.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we do not have school on Monday, January 21.  Our class spent some focused time today remembering Dr. King's passion and contributions to our nation's history.

Our first piece of persuasive writing will be in the form of a letter written to ME!  Our planning stages have been completed, including gathering powerful quotes from our peers.  Next week we will be drafting the opening, body, and closing of our persuasive letters.  Stay tuned to see if anyone's persuasive argument proves successful!

We will be finishing up our Bible unit on the Parables of Jesus next week.

The fifth graders have made great improvement in their ability to divide with two-digit divisors!  Hooray for progress!  In order to keep our minds engaged and provided needed review over the extended weekend, students are coming home with a one-sided sheet of division problems to complete.  Completed math homework sheets will be due on Tuesday, January 22.  The following Math Antics video offers a great explanation of long division:

Looking Ahead:
  • The following chaperones will be accompanying us to listen to the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, February 19: Mrs. Ritgerink, Mrs. Sterenberg, and Mrs. Laninga.  If you are interested in joining us, just let me know!  We'd love to have you!
  • Wacky Wednesdays are back!  Our first one will be Favorite Color Day on Wednesday, January 30th.
  • Market Day 2019 is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30th.  Fifth graders will have the opportunity to shop the 4th graders' stores of homemade items, and are invited to bring a few dollars to spend and a bag in which to carry their purchases.
