Twelfth Week Tidbits

Boy, these months keep on rolling by, don't they?! Here we are in the first week of November with leaves changing and falling - time seems to go by so quickly.
As we settle into this second marking period, here are some updates and reminders.

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • Books have been chosen and assigned for our literary essay unit in writing. Over the next week we will delve into our individual books, looking for themes and developing a claim that can be supported with evidence from the text.
  • Our new Bible unit, the Sermon on the Mount, was kicked off in a unique way this morning!  All of the fifth graders gathered on the small hill in the middle of the traffic circle and listened to David Mosterd, HC Director of Spiritual Development, recite the first part of Jesus' teaching.  He explained what "blessed are" meant, and gave us a framework for understanding our new unit.
  • We will begin our new reading unit, Interpretive and Analytic Reading, tomorrow and will begin to learn strategies that will help us understand our reading on a deeper level enabling us to make meaningful connections to and within our texts.
  • Our current Science unit is called Objects in the Sky and focuses our attention on the relationship of the Earth, moon, and sun, helps us understand the cause of seasons, and teaches us the physical components of the planets.
  • We continue to practice multiplying and dividing by fractions. The general consensus is that it is way easier that adding and subtracting fractions.
  • This month's Bible memory is Psalm 100. It will be due by the end of the month (11/26).
  • Reading minutes are back!  A new slip came home today and is due back next Monday.
