Thirteenth Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • This week each student chose a book to use for our literary essay writing unit.  We spent a majority of our time digging into the themes, developing claims, and searching for supports and evidence within the text.  We'll begin drafting this coming week.
  • This week in math we will continue to practice all four operations with fractions in story problems.  If all goes well, look for a math review to be sent home over the weekend.
  • Our reading unit focuses our attention on being readers who interpret and analyze the text.  As we meet in small groups, we dig deeper into our good fit books and discuss specific ways to interpret what the author is trying to tell us.
  • In Bible, we continue our study of the Sermon on the Mount.
  • Our memory verse due at the end of the month is Psalm 100, however most of the students have recited it already! Amazing!
  • We spent our time in science learning about how the Earth's tilt affects the seasons and length of daylight.

Other Tidbits:

  • We are oh-so-close (!) to our field trip to Calvin to meet with Gary Schmidt. We plan to be gone a majority of the day on Monday, November 18, leaving school by bus at 8:30am.  Students are invited (encouraged!) to bring along any book they have by him to have it personally signed.  His publisher's website has great information about him and lists his books.
  • If you are interested in joining us at Calvin, just let me know!  We'd love to have you join us.  I can connect you with other parents and give you the option of carpooling if you'd like.
  • Due to Thanksgiving, Wednesday (11/27) is a half-day, and we have Thursday (11/28) and Friday (11/29) off.
