15th Week Tidbits

December has arrived!
Along with it comes a flurry of activity for the next few weeks,
which leads to this longer-than-usual blog post!

Thank you!
Because experience tells me that thank you notes don't always make their way home, I wanted to take the opportunity here to tell you ALL how GRATEFUL I am for ALL of the treats and goodies and notes you gave during the month of November.  It's humbling to be thanked for doing what you love.

Staff Luncheon Volunteer Needed - On December 14, staff will have the opportunity to gather together for a Christmas luncheon. I will need one parent volunteer to be in our classroom during lunch (11:45-12:05). If hanging out with a fun group of fifth graders sounds like your cup of tea, please let me know!

In an ongoing effort to promote the health and well-being of students in Holland Christian Schools, 4th and 5th grade students will be asked to take a brief survey that addresses a variety of social and emotional topics. The information gained will support the school’s ability to provide comprehensive and timely support for your son or daughter if they require any assistance. Prior to any additional support being offered, parent contact will be made. If you would like more information on the screener or our process, please contact the school counselor, Kyra Short (Rose Park) or Haley Pett (Pine Ridge). We are committed to ensuring your son or daughter is supported academically, socially, and emotionally, and we look forward to partnering with each of you toward achieving this goal.

Spirit Week - It's time to celebrate and have fun! The week before Christmas we'll have a special Christmas Spirit Week:
12/13 Monday: Christmas Socks
12/14 Tuesday: Christmas Sweater
12/15 Wednesday: Christmas Headgear (antlers, hats) *We will leave them in class for chapel.*
12/16 Thursday: Red/Green Day
12/17 Friday: Christmas PJs
Let's see how creative we can be :)

Snow - Just general reminders for students as the snow starts to appear. Please talk to your child about these as it gets closer.
  • All students are expected to go outside for the allotted times (two 15 minutes times and one 25 minute time) so please prepare your child well with whatever clothing they need for the weather.
  • Snowballs are only to be thrown at the designated wall outside on the playground.
  • Snowmen and forts are only guaranteed to stay intact and claimed for the recess in which they were created.
Curriculum Tidbits:
  • We will take a break from Jesus' ministry and spend the next few weeks before Christmas Break learning about our Savior's birth in Bible.
  • Our newest math unit is Multiplication of Whole Numbers and Decimals.  This week's focus was on patterns when multiplying with zeros and on exponents.
  • We've wrapped up our Opinion Writing Unit and will shift gears to Informational Writing next week.
  • Our focus in reading is Informational Reading.  Students have each chosen some non-fiction books to use during this time.
  • In social studies we will be studying colonial occupations and making a "Help Wanted" poster based on our learning.
