35th Week Tidbits

Wow!  Summer stormed right in this week and blessed us with instant warm (HOT!) weather!  We are so thankful for our air conditioners that do such a great job of keeping our room comfortable so lots of good learning can still take place!

I also wanted to say a very sincere THANK YOU for ALL the ways you blessed (SPOILED) me last week.  Your gifts and notes filled my bucket (and my belly) big time.  I truly have the best job in the world, and I'm blessed to spend my days with your fifth grader.  There is never a day that goes by that I'm not amazed that this is my life.  Thank you for the blessing of being your child's teacher.

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • Fifth graders will be taking MAP tests this coming week in the areas of Language, Reading, and Math.  Good sleep and healthy snacks are always helpful.
  • Our Bible lessons will help us learn about Pentecost and the growth of the early church.
  • Having already researched an important figure from the Revolutionary War and created an informative pamphlet about that person, this coming week fifth graders will be planning out the public speaking aspect of our Informational Writing Unit.
  • We continue to learn about geometry and measurement in math.
  • Book clubs have wrapped up, but we are still reading historical fiction as we finish up our unit.
Other Tidbits:
  • 5th grade students will have three health lessons May 23, 24, and 26. The first will be whole-class and focus on self-esteem. This includes what the world says is beautiful, what the Bible tells us is beautiful, and how we are made in God’s image. The second and third lessons will be divided by gender as students are introduced to both how bodies change through puberty and the body systems involved in conception and pregnancy. Students benefit from conversations with their parents before and after these lessons.
  • We look forward to having a picnic with our second grade buddies from South Side on Wednesday (5/25)
  • Pine Ridge and Rose Park fifth graders look forward to mingling for a few hours at Holland State Park on Friday, May 27. This time will include an art lesson on drawing Big Red, lunch, and a few mixer games.
  • All current 2nd - 7th graders are invited to a Football Family Fun Night on Thursday, May 26 from 6:30-8pm at the HC Stadium.
    • This is a free event for anybody interested in playing football next fall with Holland Christian.
    • Whether you are just curious or all-in, come on out for a fun night of knockerball, dodgeball, air force football and ice cream sundaes.
    • Parents are encouraged to attend.
    • Kids will be split by age group.
    • Varsity HCHS football players will facilitate the games.
    • Find out more info and sign up for the event on our facebook group
    • You don't need to sign up to attend, but we appreciate it if you do, so we can properly plan.
