Week One!

We made it!  I have had the best week getting to know this bunch of fifth graders.  Thank you for entrusting them to me! I am excited to see what God has in store for us this year.

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Much of this week has been spent getting to know each other and our classroom rules, routines, and rhythms. I love seeing how each class of students takes on a personality of its own!
  • In math we are reviewing how to make equivalent fractions.  Next week we will work on comparing fractions.
  • We started learning our reading routine, and every student made a reading goal for themselves for this year.  You may want to ask your fifth grader what goal they made!
  • Our focus in Bible has been learning what it means when we say that all Scripture is "God-breathed". Next week we will learn about the "library" of the Bible which includes the books and divisions of the Bible.
  • We started reading our read aloud, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, this week. It is the mentor text we will be using for our reading teaching points.
Other Tidbits:
  • Since our first three weeks of school are partial weeks, we will wait until the first full week of school to begin sending home weekly spelling/word work lists.
  • Join me in welcoming the families of our three new students to Holland Christian: Eli Burkman, Oliver Bishop, and Annabel Dozeman. We are SO glad you are here!
  • All-school convocation will be held at the high school football field from 9-9:30am on Wednesday, September 31.  All are welcome to attend!
Requested Announcements:
  • Walk-A-Thon envelopes will be sent home soon. The Walk-A-Thon is the only elementary fundraiser for the school year. We are able to fund our Pine Ridge initiatives, as well as a variety of programming throughout the year, for our children thanks to the funds raised through this event!
  • Fall is just around the corner, and that means it's time for our Kids' Stuff Resale on Saturday, September 17, from 9 am to noon at Holland Christian High School. Join us for shopping or selling for all fall/winter kids clothing and toys. If you are interested in selling at the resale or want more information, please contact Michelle Schaap at kidsale@hollandchristian.org or call 616.820.2813. The entry fee is $1 for adults and a portion of the proceeds go directly to the Tuition Grant Fund.
