Week Thirty-Seven

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • In math, we are in our last unit on Measurement and Geometry.
  • We continue to learn about Paul's Missionary journeys.
  • This month's Bible Memory passage is Galatians 5:22-24, and is due by Friday (5/26).
  • In reading, we will continue on with our unit: Informational Reading Research.
  • Social studies has us continuing to learn about the battles of the Revolutionary War.
  • As we look towards middle school, we continue to spend some time each week doing writing check-ups which give us practice in answering questions in complete sentences and crafting paragraphs on given topics.
Other Tidbits:
  • It has become a tradition that our Pine Ridge student body gather to praise God for all the ways He has blessed the fifth graders.  This year, that Fifth Grade Celebration will be held on Thursday, June 1, beginning at 2:20pm in the "courtyard" of Pine Ridge. (This is the grassy area behind the gym.) You are invited to come and be part of this celebration of our fifth graders!
  • Mrs. Washburn is looking for parent volunteers to help assemble the "graduation hats" that will be used for our Fifth Grade Celebration on June 1.  If you have availability - even if you would rather work on them at home, email Mrs. Washburn at kwashburn@hollandchristian.org.
  • Fifth grade students will have three health lessons this coming M, T, and W. The first will be whole-class and focus on self-esteem. This includes what the world says is beautiful, what the Bible tells us is beautiful, and how we are made in God’s image. The second and third lessons will be divided by gender as students are introduced to both how bodies change through puberty and the body systems involved in conception and pregnancy. Students benefit from conversations with their parents before and after these lessons.
  • Fifth graders from both Pine Ridge and Rose Park will travel to Holland State Park on May 25, to draw Big Red (under the direction of Miss Spoelhof), play a few mixer games, and eat our sack lunches.  this even is a yearly tradition that helps fifth graders from both sides of town mingle a bit before becoming sixth graders at HCMS. (Since students will be sitting on the beach as they draw Big Red, it is recommended they bring along a beach towel.)
  • For information and parent notes on summer sports camps and MS & HS sports, please see this letter from our AD, Dave Engbers.
