Week #12 Tidbits

We've had a very busy stretch lately! I hope you'll scroll down after reading about the nuts and bolts of our week to see some pictures of our class in action. We've had a field trip to "Smit Farm", painted pumpkins to look like book characters, built symmetrical designs out of pattern blocks, participated in Holland's Little Read by reading Dreamers by Yuyi Morales and painting butterflies that included some of our own dreams, met our preschool buddies, had a dog for show-and-tell, and shared our personal narratives with friends.

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • In reading, we'll continue on in our unit all about characters. Our read aloud (mentor text) Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo has provided so many great characters for us to dig into!
  • In writing, students will begin deciding on a topic for their persuasive/opinion essays.
  • In Bible, we'll continue with stories found in Genesis and will begin reviewing/practicing this month's Bible memory passage - Psalm 100.
  • Learning about how meteorologist forecast the weather will be the focus of our new science unit. Our class will hopefully begin doing some weather observations of our own this week!
  • Multiplication and division remain the focus of our current math unit. We've also been exploring square numbers and learning about the order of operations.
Other Tidbits:
  • We are so excited for the return of Sing, Move, and Memorize this week. Each morning Mrs. Winningham will lead the K-5 students in learning Psalm 100 through song, motions, and the use of instruments.
  • Our class will have Barn Duty on Tuesday! We're excited to see how big the chicks have gotten. We've also got a little project in the works for the goat pen! Stay tuned.
Requested Announcements:
  • The Holland Christian Jazz Bands and the Old Timer’s Jazz Band are proud to present the Swingin’ the Night Away in the HCHS cafeteria on Friday, November 8, from 6:45-9pm. Admission is $5, and goes to support the music program at HCHS. New to swing dancing? No worries! Dance instructors will be on hand from 6:45pm-7:30pm to teach us the basic steps of swing, so the evening can be enjoyed by novice and experienced dancers alike. Not in the mood for dancing? Come socialize, indulge in some delicious desserts, punch, and enjoy the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and more.
Pictures! Oh, my goodness! So much learning fun is captured here! (I wish the pictures uploaded all in order and grouped together by event, but they seem to be a bit jumbled. Oh, well, I'm sure you'll still enjoy them!)
