Fourteenth Week Tidbits

Fifth graders at Hope College

We had a great day at Hope College and are so thankful to Mrs. Slenk and Mrs. Van Duinen for their connections at Hope College.  Thank you also goes to Mrs. Slenk and Mrs. Sterenberg for chaperoning!  Some highlights of our day include:
     * making three projects that focused our attention on the transfer of energy.  (I'm sure you've
        enjoyed listening to those kazoos!)
     * getting up-close-and-personal with some amphibians and reptiles.  (Oliver has quite a story!)
     * a snowy stroll on campus with a group picture taken by the anchor.
     * learning about and then creating African Art in a real art studio.

Students will finish drafting their literary essays.  These essays will be edited and published in Google Docs this coming week.

We have completed our unit on multiplying and dividing fractions.  A practice test was sent home with your child this afternoon.  It is their homework to complete the test, check their answers using the answer key that is attached to the parent email, rework missed problems, and return it to school on Monday, December 3.  The actual test will be given on Tuesday, December 4.

Our Pine Ridge annual holiday collection for Lakeshore Pregnancy Center continues through the month of December. New baby items of all kinds are welcomed!

Historical Fiction is our next reading unit.  Students chose their historical fiction novel today.  They will be reading these books in class during the unit.  We will also be enjoying many other historical fictions texts as a class in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead:
     * The December Bible memory passage is Luke 2:6-20.  A copy of it is in your child's binder.
     * Our class will have a simple Christmas celebration on Thursday, December 20 from 2:20-3:00.  We would love to have 2 or 3 parents plan a few games and a light snack.  If you are interested, please send me an email this week.  Thanks for considering!
