Twenty-ninth Week Tidbits

Have you heard your child talk about our "Fill Your Cup" time each morning?  Part of what we are learning from Jesus' teachings this year is the importance of quieting ourselves and learning to be with God by reading His Word regularly so we can fill our minds and hearts with His transforming words.  One way we are putting this into practice is that each student spends time each morning independently reading through a given Bible passage and asking, "Who does this tell me God is?" or "What does this tell me about His character?" or "Who does this say that I am in God's eyes?" Join me in praying that God blesses this time and grows the desire for each one of these students to value regular time in the Word.  (Unsure why we call it "Fill Your Cup" time?  Ask your fifth grader!)
Today marks the end of the third marking period.  How can it be?! Look for report cards to be sent home with your fifth grader next week Friday.  I look forward to meeting with each of you during Parent Teacher Conferences on March 27 and 29.

In writing our time will be spent publishing our informational persuasive picture books using Google Slides to create and vibrant "eBook" that will be shared with some of the younger students here at Pine Ridge upon completion.

Our reading time will focus on developing strategies to use when we come across unfamiliar words in our text, i.e. how to use the context of the text to determine the meaning of a word.  When we return from Spring Break, we will dive into Historical Fiction Book Clubs.

Matthew 28:1-10 is this month's Bible memory passage and is due to be recited to me by March 28.  Students also have the option of completing a fill-in-the-blank if they prefer.

It's been exciting to see the class being pushed outside of their comfort zone of book choices and  reading a wide variety of books during their independent reading time.  This is all thanks to our ongoing "Book Stack Reading Challenge".  Ask your child what types of books they still have on their check list.  Maybe you even have a book around the house that fits the bill!

Our next field trip will be on Thursday, April 18, from 8:15am-2:30pm.  We will be visiting the Gerald R. Ford Museum.  Thank you to Mrs. Sterenberg and Mrs. Holloway who have volunteered to be our chaperones.  We still have room for one more if you would like to join us!
