The above video was shared last night at the HC Living Stones Lecture Series with Randy Alcorn and Kirk Cousins. It served as an appropriate introduction for the evening, and really echoes so much of what we've focused on in Bible this year.
We are diving into our last math unit on measurement and geometry. The measurement portion focuses pretty heavily on converting both standard and metric units of length, volume, and weight. We'll be weaving the geometry throughout the unit as it lends itself well to many high interest hands-on activities. This week the students learned about pentominoes and used them to create three different types of patterns (slide, flip, and rotate), created their own irregular shape to use in making their own tessellation, and used protractors to measure angles.
Historical fiction book clubs continue with the students digging deeper into the text, stretching their thinking in group discussions, and considering how the historical time period of their novel impacts the characters in the story.
In Bible we have taken a "zoomed in" look at the resurrection of Jesus, paying close attention to the evidence the Gospels give us and comparing each account. Next week we will continue to look at other events that happened after Jesus' resurrection.
April's memory verse (Acts 2:1-4) is due on Tuesday, April 30. Students may recite it to me or complete a fill-in-the-blank.
The fifth graders continue to add to their collection of written poetry. This week they wrote a "Definition Poem" and a "Two-fer Poem". Their creativity is being stretched as they consider word choice. It's been really fun to hear how each student's "voice" still shines through as they share their poems with the class.
In social studies the students are "knee deep" in the campaigns and battles of the American Revolution. Current topics are the harsh winter at Valley Forge, the final victory at Yorktown, and the leadership of General George Washington.
Our Spring POD Service Day is Wednesday, May 1. This is always a great opportunity to serve our community. Please have your fifth grader wear his/her Preparing a Table shirt that day.
Looking Ahead:
- We will dismiss at 11:30 on Wednesday (5/8) and Thursday (5/9) due to Tulip Time. Fifth graders do not march in the parade, however there is still a need for Dutch Masters and South Side Helpers. Please use this link to sign up if your child is interested!
- On Wednesday, May 15, both fifth grade classes will go to Mt. Pisgah to learn about invasive species. Our time has not yet been confirmed, but it is not a full day field trip. We will need chaperones, and I will let you know as soon as we have a timeframe so you can sign-up.
- Field Day is being planned for the afternoon of Monday, May 20, on South Side's playground.
- On Thursday, May 23, the fifth graders will spend the bulk of the day (10am-2pm) at Holland State Park with the fifth graders from Rose Park. If you would like to accompany us, please email me. We'd love to have you!
- NO SCHOOL on Monday (5/27) for Memorial Day.
- Last half-day of school is Friday (5/31).
