Thirty-sixth Week Tidbits

This month's memory work is Galatians 5:22-26.  Students should plan on reciting or completing the fill-in-the-blank no later than May 24.

Our Invasive Species Field Trip is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th.  We will be outside at Riley Trails from 9:30-11:30am.  Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and for possibly getting dirty.  Closed toe shoes are a must as it will likely be quite muddy.  I'm sure it will be a great morning of learning!

Both fifth grade classes enjoyed some outdoor learning this afternoon as they worked in mixed teams to complete a Geometry Scavenger Hunt.  From averaging running times, to measuring tree trunks and playground equipment, to drawing angles on the blacktop, they may not have even realized they were learning and practicing their math skills!

With haiku and acrostics under our belts, we will turn our poetry writing attention to limericks.  Sharing our poetry with our classmates has been a highlight of this writing unit.

Our historical fiction book clubs have come to a close.  Now that the groups are experts on their own books, they will spend time discussing their books with other groups to find common themes and life lessons.

Next week the students will be taking the MAP tests for math, language, and reading.

On Thursday, May 23, we will spend most of our day at Holland State Park.  After spending some time drawing Big Red, all HC fifth graders will enjoy a pizza lunch and some mixer games before heading back to school.  Mrs. Plaggemars and Mrs. Bruinsma are chaperoning.  If you would like to join in on the fun, just let me know!

Convocation will be held in the high school gymnasium at 9am on Tuesday, May 14.  We would love to have you join us for this time of worship as a HC school community.

Boys Cross Country Meeting
On Thursday, May 16, Coach Mulder will be meeting with 5th grade boys interested in participating on the middle school cross country team in the fall.  The meeting will take place during lunch.
