Oh, how I love this bunch! We have had SUCH a great first two weeks of fifth grade. This is a hard-working, kind, and fun group. I have been blessed by them!
For our reading time in class, students must have a "good fit" book (and a back-up good fit book) in their desk. These books may come from home, my classroom library, the PR library, Herrick DL, etc. For their reading requirement at home they may read anything that they want to read. We want to increase their "reading for enjoyment". So this may be their "good fit" book, but it does not have to be.
In math we have been comparing fractions. Going forward we will dive into mixed numbers and addition and subtraction of fractions.
Next week we will begin both reading minutes (150/week) and word work/spelling. Your fifth grader will come home with a purple slip of paper on Tuesday (9/3) on which to keep track of their reading minutes that week. The signed paper will be returned to school the following Monday. He/She will also come home with a list of words to practice for our first spelling test on Friday (9/6).
A few reminders about upcoming dates:
- We do not have school on Friday (8/30) or Monday (9/2) due to Labor Day.
- Picture Day is Thursday, September 12.
- Walk-a-Thon Wednesday, September 25, in the afternoon.
- Psalm 8 due Thursday, September 26. (But students may say it to me anytime before that.)
- No school on Friday, September 27 (Staff Professional Development).
