Fourth Week Tidbits

Source

So...it's been a wee bit hot and sticky this week.  Not sure if you've noticed!  These kids have been ROCK STARS though!  They are hard-working and had a great attitude when taking MAP tests in extreme heat.

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • The class has learned how to add and subtract fractions with uncommon denominators this week, and they've done so well! Next week we will continue our study of fractions by working to estimate reasonable answers.  We plan to complete our fraction unit next week and have our unit assessment the following week.
  • In Social Studies we will shift our attention to some of the first colonies to settle in the New World like Roanoke, Jamestown.
  • Our Bible focus will be on Jesus' first miracle and Nicodemus' encounter with Jesus.
  • We completed our Six-Word Memoirs by publishing them in Google Slides and sharing those memoirs with our fifth grade classmates. Next week we will begin to generate ideas for writing our own (paragraphs long) memoir.
Reminders and Upcoming Dates:
  • One of the ways fifth grades will commemorate Constitution Day on Tuesday (9/17) by wearing red, white, and/or blue.
  • We will gather to eat lunch with our P.O.D. group on Wednesday (9/18).  These multi-grade groups are a great source of connection for many students and build community across the grade levels here at Pine Ridge.
  • The Walk-a-thon is coming up on Wednesday, September 25.  Packets are due to be returned by September 18.
  • Maybe you've heard about our "Fifth Grade is Fun" activities.  A few weeks ago all three fifth grade classes gathered in the gym to play some group games, and this afternoon we had another opportunity to do the same.  These times are great ways to build community within the grade level and also put into practice some great life skills such as going with the flow, being a team player, playing to have fun, not only to win, encouraging others and being a good sport.
