Fourteenth Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • We finished Pay Attention, Carter Jones, our read aloud, today.  Oh, how we loved that book!  We have compiled quite a list of questions to ask Prof. Gary Schmidt when we visit on Monday.
  • Over the next few weeks we will be reading Gary Schmidt's Retelling of Pilgrim's Progress for devotions.  I've read it to the last ten of my classes, and it's impact is no less challenging and encouraging.
  • Due to the snow day, we are still wrapping up our current math unit on multiplication and division of fractions and will have a test sometime next week.
  • In science we graphed the daylight hours in three different US locations to compare them to deepen our understanding of the relationship of the Earth's tilt to the seasons.  We also marveled at the greatness of our God as we contemplate the vastness of space and the Universe.
  • Our class is in the middle of drafting our literary essays, working to present strong evidence to support our claim.
  • Reading Minutes are due on Monday (11/18).

Other Tidbits:
  • Monday (11/18) is our field trip to visit Gary Schmidt at Calvin!  We are SO excited!  Please be sure your fifth grader comes with a cold lunch.  Binders may stay at home on Monday, and lunches will be kept in backpacks and carried with us.  Students should be dressed for walking across campus.  We will depart PR at 8:30am, and plan to return by 2:30pm. All electronic devices should be left at home.
  • Students are invited to bring along a copy of a book by Gary Schmidt for him to autograph.  This is entirely optional!  This link has a listing of all of his books.
  • The Scholastic Book Fair begins on Monday (11/18) in the Pine Ridge Media Center.  Contact Laura Norman (lnorman@hollandchristian.org) if you are interested in volunteering!
