Sixteenth Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits
:

  • Our literary essay unit concluded today with a writing celebration.  All three classes were able to spend time sharing what they had written with each other.  Look for a printed copy to be sent home next week!
  • Over the next two weeks, the fifth graders will enjoy some "free" writing time.  They will tap into their inner creativity and craft their own fiction story.  This is a great opportunity for the students to write with few parameters and stretch their creative muscle.
  • In math we've spent time on exponents and patterns in multiplication by the powers of ten.  Next week we will focus on multiplying both whole and decimal numbers efficiently.
  • We are digging deeper into the story of Christ's birth, taking a look at the world into which he was born, the angel's visit to both Elizabeth and Mary, and soon we will look at the announcement of Jesus' birth to Joseph.  Every single part of Jesus's birth was intricately orchestrated by God and is layered with His deep love for us!
  • Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I hope the fifth graders find something to love in the pages of the historical fiction book they chose this past week.  During our reading block in school, students will only be reading their historical fiction books.  Students should finish reading at least one book by next week Friday, so they can work on the final project in the week before Christmas.
  • Reading Minutes slips are due on Monday.

Other Tidbits:

  • Donations are still be accepted for Positive Options.  Any baby item is very much appreciated; a detailed list was sent home with the students, too.
  • There is a staff Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December 19th.  If you are willing to sit in with the best fifth grade class around for lunch from 11:55-12:!0, please let me know.
