Twenty-Third Week Tidbits

Source
Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Research for our informational writing unit continues.  Thank you for helping your fifth grader find appropriate websites.  Later in the week we will begin writing the first draft.
  • This week we will try our hand at writing story problems for given equations.  This involves quite a bit of higher-order thinking and can be challenging.
  • In reading we will work on developing some vocabulary strategies to use when reading non-fiction.
  • We are wrapping up our study of Jesus' parables before moving into Jesus' Ministry in Galilee.

Other Tidbits:

  • Our class will celebrate Valentine's Day on Thursday, Feb. 14.  The exchange is completely optional (but most fifth graders still choose to participate.)
  • Due to a Staff Professional Development Day and Winter Break, we do not have school on Friday (2/14) or Monday (2/17).
  • We will hear the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra perform on March 3.  If you are interested in joining us, let me know!
  • Family Fun Night is scheduled for Friday, March 13.
  • The fifth and sixth graders have been invited to visit HC Middle School on Friday, March 27.  We are excited as we anticipate the transition to the middle school building in the fall! More details to follow.
  • Looking way ahead, the annual fifth grade Beach Day (when RP and PR fifth graders get an opportunity to interact and begin to know each other) is scheduled for May 28.  We will need some parent chaperones, so if you'd like to join us, just let me know!
