Settling in, a "Graduation", and Community Building

This week's cooler temperatures were a welcomed change this week!  This bunch has been settling in so well.  I've been especially impressed with their enthusiasm for being together and their willingness to reach out and include others.

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • With our background in the who-what-where-when-how-and-why of the Bible set, we'll be delving into stories about John the Baptist and Jesus' Baptism next week.
  • Even though it will be another four-day week, we will begin our word work/spelling lists on Tuesday with our first test on Friday. Students practice daily at school, and - as fifth graders - are responsible for practicing at home as needed.
  • Our focus in math will be on using strategies that help us compare fractions.
  • Students will have fun writing, publishing, and sharing a six-word memoir this week.  With only six words to work with, word choice is critical!
  • Our reading unit is called Following Characters Into Meaning and will help us dig deeper into what the author is telling us through characters' actions and choices.
  • Reading minutes begin when we return from our long weekend.  The fifth grade requirement is 150 minutes/week.  Students should focus on reading for fun and choose reading material that they enjoy and want to read.  Anything counts as long as they are reading! On Mondays (Tuesday in the case of next week), students will receive a paper to help them keep track of their minutes.  They will return the signed reading minutes sheet the following Monday.
Other Tidbits:

  • MAP testing will begin next week.  This is just one more piece of data that helps us to shape and individualize instruction moving forward.
  • Students will have B.O.M. three times this week...Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
  • Walk-a-thon envelopes were sent home yesterday.  We will participate in a walk-a-thon as a class sometime during the week of September 21.
  • The fourth grade teachers visited our classroom yesterday and treated our class to a mini-graduation as they passed out students' batons (pics below)Batons should have made it home in your fifth grader's backpack. Send the batons back to school once you have read them.
  • We ended our week by playing Spikeball for an enjoyable way to help us build community while also getting outside (pics below).
