Twenty-Fourth Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • Our division unit continues with dividing by a two-digit divisor.
  • During our morning "Daily Oral Language" time, we will be focusing on correct comma usage.
  • Students will investigate various colonial occupations and make a "Help Wanted" ad with learned information.
  • It's time to begin drafting our informational "books".
  • New spelling words will come home on Tuesday, since we have Monday (2/15) off due to a Professional Development Day for teachers.
  • In reading, we will learn how to identify sequence or chronological order text structures in our non-fiction reading.
  • We are continuing to learn about important historical figures as part of Black History Month.  Our wall display keeps growing! (See pictures below.)
  • The students also enjoyed learning a little bit about the Chinese (Lunar) New Year and made red lanterns to decorate the fifth grade hallway. (See pictures below!)

Other Tidbits:
  • We may all be feeling a bit of winter cabin fever, perhaps even the fifth graders, as this week has brought the necessity for the following reminders:
    • Even at this point in the year, much of my day is spent giving reminders for students to wear their masks.  However, despite my persistence, the need for reminders is not lessening.  Please remind your fifth grader of the requirement.
    • The wonderful snow piles on the playground have been the source of much fun at recess time, and for that we are thankful!  Unfortunately, along with that have come complaints of deliberate rough/bullying type play.  As we work to keep recess enjoyable and safe for all, please remind your fifth grader that all students should be and feel safe on the playground.
  • Optional Discipleship Practices At Home Activities During Lent - As we begin the journey to the cross through Lent, we want to walk with you and center ourselves around Christ; his death and resurrection. To do that together, on weekdays we will be posting on social media and the HC website, a short Bible passage and some conversation questions that revolve around Discipleship Practices (behaviors that are rooted in the Bible, Church History, and are used as our integration of faith in all that we do at HC). This is not a checklist, or to-do list, but simply a way we can partner together as we worship Christ in all things.
