Curriculum Tidbits:
- The fifth graders did an outstanding job on this week's unit six math test on word problems! This week we began unit seven by learning about order of operations. Next week we will delve into the coordinate plane.
- We will be wrapping up our current Bible unit next week and reviewing for a unit test on Thursday (5/6). Look for a review sheet to be sent home next week.
- Haiku, alliteration, free verse...our class continues to learn about and write all different types of poetry! Next week they will write an acrostic poem and a color poem.
- Our historical fiction book clubs continue into next week.
- In social studies, we will be reviewing the battles of the Revolutionary War.
- We returned to our STEM Lab to continue our work creating specified shapes using tangrams. (See pics below.)
Other Tidbits:
- A pop-up Tulip Time celebration will happen at Pine Ridge on Wednesday afternoon. Students are welcome to wear their Dutch costumes - or bring them to change into after lunch - if they want. It is totally optional!
- The Scholastic Book Fair is virtual this year and begins on May 3. Follow this link if you are interested in ordering.
- We look forward to visiting the middle school on Tuesday, May 4. This will allow the fifth graders to tour the building, meet the teachers, and get some of their questions answered.
- Fifth grade students will have three health lessons in May. The first will be whole-class and focus on self-esteem. This includes what the world says is beautiful, what the Bible tells us is beautiful, and how we are made in God’s image. The second and third lessons will be divided by gender as students are introduced to both how bodies change through puberty and the body systems involved in conception and pregnancy. Students benefit from conversations with their parents before and after these lessons.
- All library materials are due to be returned by May 14.
- Field Day is being planned for June 3.
