11th Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Our third math unit is Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. So far, we have multiplied simple fractions, multiplied fractions and a whole number, and worked on simplifying.  Typically this unit is trickiest for those who aren't fluent with their math facts, so any extra practice at home is always helpful!
  • In Bible, we will be learning about Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, beginning with the Beatitudes.
  • Our social studies focus is on the 13 colonies - learning about the specifics of the northeast colonies, the middle colonies, and the southern colonies.
  • In reading, we continue to reflect on teaching points that focus our attention on what we can learn from the characters in our books.
  • Students had fun generating a list of their opinions in preparation for their "Opinion Writing Unit".  Next week, they will need to narrow their list down and decide which opinion they want to use for their writing.
  • On Wednesday (11/10), both fifth grade classes will be spending the afternoon OUTSIDE.
    • This will be an extension of social studies and our learning about some of the early settlers.
    • Students should come prepared to dress for the weather.  (Outdoor-appropriate clothing, hats and gloves if necessary, outdoor shoes or boots in case it's muddy.)
Other Tidbits:
  • On Wednesday (11/17),  the fifth graders will be traveling to Calvin University to meet with Professor and award winning author, Gary D. Schmidt.  We are SO EXCITED!
    • Students are welcome to bring any books by Gary D. Schmidt for him to sign.
    • Here is the publisher's site that lists many of his books, or you can check out the list on GoodReads.
    • Students will need to have a sack lunch as we will leave Pine Ridge by 9:30am and return by 2:30pm.
    • Masks will be required on the bus ride and while on Calvin's campus. If this will be a problem for your fifth grader, aside from those with medical waivers, please let me know at your earliest convenience so alternate learning plans can be made for your child here at school.
  • We look forward to meeting in our mixed-grade P.O.D. groups on Friday (11/12).  (P.O.D. stands for "Practicing Our Discipleship".)
