17th Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Important: Today your fifth grader is coming home with a "Heritage Project" interview packet to do over Christmas Break.  Their task is to interview an adult family friend or relative ("adult" = 30s and above would be preferable to get the kind of information needed.  The greater the age spread between the interviewer and interviewee, the better!) The interview can be in person or via phone or Zoom, etc. The information they gather and take notes on from the interview will be used to created a nonfiction informational essay utilizing different text structures.
  • Our reading unit pairs nicely with writing in that we'll be learning to recognize different text structures as we read nonfiction.
  • In math, we are in the middle of our unit on multiplying whole numbers and decimals.  When we return from break, we will dive into noticing shift patterns when multiplying decimals by powers of ten.
  • We'll continue to learn more about Jesus' Birth and the events surrounding it once we return in January.

Other Tidbits:
  • THANK YOU so much for continuing to SPOIL ME with your generosity.  The gifts, cards, and words of encouragement and reminders of your prayers are humbling.  I'm just so grateful for every one of your families, and I'm grateful to be partnering with each of you this school year! (Thank you cards have been given to your fifth grader.  Fingers crossed that they make it home!)
  • This time of year, it's common for white board markers, Post-its, glue sticks and pencils to need replenishing. Check in with your fifth grader to see how they are doing with supplies.
  • School will resume on Monday, January 3.
  • We look forward to welcoming a new student, Henry VanRavenswaay after Christmas Break. Our class has already met Henry, and has been discussing ways we can prepare for his arrival. Please join with us in praying for this big transition for Henry.  Pray also that we prepare ourselves to be a welcoming community for him and his family.
  • News from Mrs. Pett, our school counselor:  Greetings parent(s)/guardian(s) of 5th grade girls, We are excited to announce that, beginning in January, we will be holding a girls group for all 5th grade girls at Pine Ridge. This group is designed as a safe place for 5th grade girls to get to know each other as well as explore and discuss the topic of friendship. This group will be held for 30 minutes, during lunch, on the first Wednesday of the month of January, February and March. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out, hpett@hollandchristian.org. The topics will be as follows:
    • January 5: Friendship. What does a good friendship look like, sound like and feel like
    • February 2: Conflict Resolution. How can friends handle conflict with one another?
    • March 2: Self-esteem. I am a child of God and I am enough.
