18th Week Tidbits

Well, this certainly shaped up to be a strange first week back to school after Christmas Break! Perhaps it was just what we needed to ease back into the groove.  In any case, here's an overview of next week's learning.

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • We'll continue on in Unit 4 in math, focusing on multi-digit multiplication with and without decimals and understanding shift patterns when multiplying by powers of ten.
  • In Bible, we'll finish up stories that happened right after Jesus' birth before returning to Jesus' ministry.
  • In writing, we are digging into our non-fiction literary essays.  Using the information gathered over Christmas Break for our Heritage Project, students are beginning to craft descriptive, compare & contrast, sequence, cause & effect, and problem/solution paragraphs.  (If your fifth grader did not turn in a completed interview packet, they will need to have it returned to school by Monday to keep from falling behind.)
  • Our reading unit coincides with writing, and focuses our learning on recognizing the text structures used in non-fiction reading/writing.
  • Since our week was cut short, last week's spelling list will become this week's spelling list, with a test on Friday (1/14).
Other Tidbits:
  • Our class was blessed with another student last week.  Join me in welcoming Henry VanRavenswaay to our class!
  • The MAP testing and Delta testing window is over the next two weeks.  Data from these tests help us to continue to individualize learning opportunities for our students.
