21st Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • We have been learning all about the expanding ministry of Jesus in Galilee! One of the stories is "Feeding of the 5,000." As a tangible reminder of Jesus' mission, this past week fifth graders decorated over 100 sack supper bags for Kids Food Basket. We are grateful for this charitable organization that provides over 8,000 meals to local children each night to help combat hunger and food insecurity.
  • In celebration of the upcoming Lunar New Year, students will learn more about Chinese culture. We will explore "the year of the tiger" through a variety of grade-level activities. Students are invited to wear RED on Tuesday, 2/1 -- the official date of the Chinese New Year!
  • February is Black History Month! School, media center, and classroom activities will celebrate the accomplishments of African-American innovators. A fifth grade highlight will be a wall-size paper quilt featuring notable individuals such as Rosa Parks, Katherine Johnson, Jackie Robinson, and Louis Armstrong.
  • Science! Science! Science! Students are engaged in lessons that are part of our animal classification/adaptation unit called "Systems and Survival."
  • Psalm 1 is due on Monday.  Students have the option of reciting it alone or with one or two classmates, or completing a fill-in-the-blank.
Other Tidbits:

* Psalm 121 is our Bible Memory passage for the month of February.

* Wacky Wednesdays conclude this coming week with Pajama Day on Wednesday, 2/2.

* We will have a "Read and Feed" on Wednesday, 2/2. Students may bring a non-caffeinated drink and snack from home to enjoy while they read.

* We will have a class Valentine exchange on Monday, 2/14. This is optional, but I have found that most fifth graders still enjoy participating.  We just encourage students who want to participate to either to ALL the boys/girls or the entire class so no one is left out.

* There is no school for students on Monday, 2/21.

* Thank you for letting me know if your child is sick or has an appointment. To keep the office informed, you may include them on the email:  pr@hollandchristian.org
