24th Week Tidbits

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • We have wrapped up our units on reading and writing non-fiction and will begin new units on interpreting and analyzing what we read and write.
  • Our science focus has been on learning about animals' learned and instinctive behaviors and how those things help them to survive.
  • Our new Bible unit is all about Jesus' parables.
  • Dividing whole numbers and decimals continues in math as we practice applying what we know to word problems.
  • Students are polishing up their Heritage Projects, and we should be able to print and share them next week!  They have worked very hard on these!
  • Our class applied what we learned in a STEM activity earlier this month to create a pop-up book for Black History Month.  They were very proud to share the book with their second grade buddies on Wednesday.  Currently, the 3rd and 4th graders at Pine Ridge are enjoying their book.
  • Next week, in anticipation of "March is Reading Month", students will record a brief video "book talk" to share with others.  You can help by simply showing an interest in what your fifth grader is reading and encouraging them to read good, quality books so they can share easily. A brief overview of this activity will come home with your fifth grader.
Other Tidbits:
  • Due to professional development meetings, there is no school on Monday (2/21).
  • This coming Tuesday {2-22-2022} is TWOSday!   Fifth graders are invited to use their creativity to celebrate this day when they come to school.  (Dress like a TWIN with a friend? Bring TWO of something to show the class? Wear TWO pigtails? Wear TWO PAIRS of something? Wear a TUTU/TWO-TWO?). The possibilities are endless!

TTQ- Total Trek Quest
Pine Ridge is looking forwarding to hosting TTQ this year. This is a program for 3rd- 5th grade boys which focuses on health, confidence and friendship. This year it will be lead by a 4th grade parent, but if you'd like to be an assistant coach please contact the office. Practices will take place on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:15, starting March 15th. The boys took home a flyer that has more information if you'd like to sign up your 3rd-5th grader.

GOTR - Girls On the Run
Pine Ridge is looking forward to hosting a GOTR team again this year! GOTR is a program for 3-5th grade girls which focuses on inspiring them to be joyful, healthy and confident. GOTR meets at Pine Ridge two times per week from 3:15-4:15, April 11th through June 4th. The season will culminate with the Celebration 5K Fun Run on June 4th, hosted by Coopersville.

GOTR’s registration will open online soon, but first we are in need of at least two coaches for the team. We can have two head coaches (sign up with a friend!) or one head coach that is there for both practices, and two assistant coaches who each take one practice a week. If you enjoy leading girls and inspiring them to be joyful, healthy and confident, please consider becoming a GOTR coach! Moms, dads, guardians, aunts, uncles... even grandparents can be coaches! One benefit of being a coach is that you will get a discount on registration for your girl.

Coaches should apply ASAP so they can begin their training. You can learn more at https://www.gotrwm.org/coach If you are interested please email pr@hollandchristian.org or let the front office know.
