Week Ten

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Our new Bible memory passage for November is Psalm 100.
  • We will be wrapping up our current math unit on adding and subtracting decimal numbers this coming week.  Look for a practice test to be sent home with your fifth grader on Friday, Nov. 4.
  • Students have completed a digital response journal for each of the stories in our Bible unit.  Our next unit begins with learning about the Beatitudes.
  • On Monday we will focus on the significance of Reformation Day in Bible.
  • We continue to dig deep into our good fit books as we work in our "Interpreting Characters" reading unit.
  • In social studies, students are learning about the settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth.

Other Tidbits:

  • We are VERY excited to have our first field trip scheduled!  On Monday, November 21, the fifth graders will travel to Calvin University in Grand Rapids to visit with Newbery Award Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt.  Students are welcome to bring one of his books to get signed by him. (We just finished Pay Attention, Carter Jones. We are staring Wednesday Wars. But he has many other books to choose from!) We will also be eating our sack lunches on campus and taking a mini-tour.
    • We will need some parent chaperones, so let me know if you are interested.  Just be aware that you will have to meet us at Calvin as we will not have room on the bus.  Some parents choose to carpool.
  • Remind your fifth grader that since they have two lockers, they are welcome to keep some extra cold-weather layers (hats, mittens, extra socks, etc.) so they are ready for the ever-changing Michigan weather.
  • A few students could use their own pair of ear buds/headphones to use with their laptop.
  • Picture retakes are Wednesday, November 2.
    • Students who missed having their pictures taken on the original picture day due to illness, will have their pictures taken. (I have their original envelopes at school.).
    • Students who wish to have their pictures retaken should bring in their picture packet/booklet that day.
