Week Nineteen

 (Source)

Curriculum Tidbits:
  • We are deep into Unit 4 in Math multiplying whole numbers and decimals.
  • Our unit about Jesus' parables continues in Bible.
  • Our morning grammar lessons have focused on prepositional phrases, coordinating conjunctions, and next week will focus on subordinating conjunctions.
  • Students will begin to draft their "Informational Writing" next week, based on the information they gathered in their interviews.
  • Psalm 1 is our Bible memory passage for this month.  It is due on January 31.
Other Tidbits:
  • This week students took the MAP Test on math, language, and reading.
  • Thank you for sending in some NEW white board markers with your fifth grader. (We've hit the time of year when many/most of their markers have dried up and my supply of extras for them to borrow/use is quickly disappearing.)
  • The fifth grade classes have enjoyed doing some combined Martin Luther King Jr..activities this week.
  • Fifth graders received information about the yearbook cover contest.  Entries are due on January 27.
  • To make the most of this week's Wacky Wednesday (PJ Day!), we will be having a "Read-and-Feed" that day.  Students in our class are invited to bring in a special snack and drink to enjoy while reading.
  • Our second quarter ends today (1/13).  Look for reports cards next Friday (1/20).
  • We do not have school on Monday (1/16) - Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Requested Announcements:
  • Starting January 18, and continuing into February, all of the girls in 5th grade will have the opportunity to come together to have a conversation about friendship. This conversation will be led by Pine Ridge's school counselor, Haley Pett. It will be broken into three short (30 minute) sessions, with each session having a different focus: healthy friendships, communication and handling conflict. If you have any questions or concerns about your child participation in this group, please email Haley at hpett@hollandchristian.org.
  • Wacky Wednesdays schedule:
    • January 18 - PJ Day
    • January 25 - Sports Day (Apparel only; no hats or equipment.)
    • February 1 - Hat day
