Week Twenty-Two

Curriculum Tidbits:

  • Our new math unit, Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals, begins with mastering the long-division algorithm with one and two-digit divisors.  We will continue practicing this skill this week.
  • We have nearly completed writing all of the paragraphs for our literary non-fiction heritage writing piece.  This week we will not only polish up our paragraphs, we will work to finish creating graphic organizers for each text structure.
  • With our parables projects completed, our new unit continues our study of Jesus' Ministry in Galilee.
  • This month's Bible memory passage is Psalm 121, and is due at the end of the month. As always, students have the option of reciting it to me (alone or with a few friends) or completing a fill-in-the-blank.
  • Our second half of "To Infinity and Beyond" will help us learn about patterns we see in the sky.
  • We continue in our non-fiction reading unit focusing on identifying main idea and details, taking notes on what we read, and figuring out unfamiliar words by using context clues.  All of these skills work together to help the students read-to-learn, a skill that becomes increasingly more important as they move to middle and high school.

Other Tidbits:

  • Our 2nd grade South Side preschool buddies will visit us this week Wednesday (2/8).
  • Our class won a "Hot Chocolate Party" because of our participation in last week's Hat Day. We hope to enjoy the hot chocolate on Valentine's Day.
  • Fifth graders are welcome to bring valentines to pass out for the whole class or for just the boys/girls.  (This is not required, but typically most fifth graders choose to participate.)
  • Thank you to Sara Bronsink for being willing to get all the balloons for yesterday's 1000th Day celebration.
